Great little tool too have at your side. Sep 03, 2010 Well I have had the surge for about a month now and have found that it has been of use several times for me. Pliers work very well so far I have used them while doing some wiring and some assembly both times no running for a tool just there. Can opener works like a dream, knife blades are sharp and seem to stay sharp that is a plus. Scissors have cut everything that I have asked them too. Saw blade has been used a couple of times and has done a great job that surprised me. Driver bits have been very good also as I ride a motorcycle and now have tool kit on my belt for the bike.
Reason that only gave it a four is that the tool has just started to give me trouble closing up smoothly. Probably will have to contact Leathermen on that. The sheath is not very well designed as far as seperation of tool and accessories, holds all, but bits fall out if not taken out with tool, can't leave extra bits in sheath if tool is not in there, bad design.
Surge vs. Super-Tool 300 Jul 24, 2010 Through a bit of confusion, I recently got a Super-Tool 300 and a Surge at the same time. My multitool needs are primarily camping, but I also have it in my EDC for whatever may come up. Since it won't be in my pocket, weight wasn't a priority for me, so I was looking for the most versatile tool.
Disclaimer: Unlike some of the reviewers on here, I'm not a multi-tool conniseur. I don't have a bunch of other brands and types laying around to compare. Perhaps Leatherman has fallen in quality over the years, perhaps other brands are better; but both the Surge and 300 are plenty solid enough for me. Aside from bragging rights or argument purposes, I really don't see there being a practial point to complaining about the ruggedness or durability of either of these tools. I'm very happy with the overall impression of both of them.
I'll share with you my comparison of these tools in my efforts to decide which to keep:
Surge:
Advantages:
-outside accessible tools (straight blade, serrated blade, scissors, and file/saw). Very handy, even if it isn't an emergency.
-I prefer the positioning of the blades when open (they're at the bottom of the tool instead of sticking out of the upper half like on the 300)
Disadvantages:
-you must choose to have the saw or file in the tool at any given time. They both use the same spot in the tool and you can swap them pretty easily. It's not too big a deal to keep the unused tool in its sheath, but the potential exists to lose it.
-slightly heavier than the 300
-non-replaceable wire cutters: they're a molded part of the pliers
Super-Tool 300
Advantages:
-nice, big indents for opening up blades with gloves on (but you have to unfold the whole tool first)
-carries both file and saw simultaneously
-replaceable wire cutters
Disadvantages:
-generally speaking, not as ergonomic or nice/easy to use as the surge (my opinion)
-the screwdriver layout seems somewhat redundant and inefficient. I much prefer the bit-drivers on the Surge.
Other than these items, these tools are pretty much idential in functionality. Despite very different configurations, the array of sizes of screwdrivers (phillips and flathead) between the Surge and 300 is pretty much a wash.
The "premium sheath" has a body made of nylon and a covering flap made of leather. (Identical for both tools). It's pretty good - attaches to your belt horizontally.
If I hadn't had them to compare side-to-side, I would have loved the Super-Tool 300.
But as it was, I wound up choosing to keep the Surge, and passed the 300 on to my brother in law. What cinched the decision for me was the outside accessible tools and the general ergonomics of the tool. In practice, it's very nice to just grab the tool and be able to open up the blades with one hand. Hard to put into words, but I just like the Surge more. It feels better.
knife awesome, sheath sucks Jul 21, 2010 I got my surge, veyr happy with it. It doesnt seem to be as tightly built as the wave I got a few years ago, but still good. The sheath that comes in this deal is crap though. It is way bigger than it needs to be. It isnt the good leather sheath that you can get sperately on amazon. I would suggest getting the surge without the sheath that comes in this deal and purchasing the other leather sheath.
had to be fixed Jul 20, 2010 This item was purchased as a gift to my dear uncle who lives outside US. I took it to him this summer. He was very excited about this instrument at first. Unfortunately, one part would not open as it was supposed to. Luckily, my uncle is quite a handyman and has a collection of fine instruments at home. He was able to get it fixed! Or he is saying he fixed it so that I don't get upset (I hope not!). This is a major disappointment. As you see, returning or replacing the item wasn't really an option. Was it just really bad luck? I expected good and reliable quality from Leatherman.
Its a nice tool with good quality Jun 28, 2010 Its a nice tool with good quality, should try using it in different weather conditions and check it out about the quality.
Though it weighs a bit heavy it does its job perfectly and I found it veryful !
As usual Amazon shipped it perfectly on time :)
